Tagging is the process by which a user (usually the content creator, but not always) applies descriptive keywords to a piece of content.

These keywords then become links to other content by that user with the same tags, thus enabling people to easily find related content. It's then usually possible to find content that everyone on that platform has tagged, usually with a couple of quick clicks.

People also tag updates to Twitter, although because of the convention on that service, where the tag is differentiated from other words by adding the # symbol to the front of it, it is referred to as hashtagging. It is basically the same as tagging on other platforms, however it isn't usual practice to use the # symbol in other tagging schemes.
