Software as a service
From DaveWiki
Software as a Service (also known as SaaS) is a description of applications which run within the web browser, with all the software on the server.
This is opposed to traditional, desktop applications, which involve installing files on your local computer - in other words, the one on your desk.
SaaS is an element of cloud computing.
There are a number of advantages to using SaaS:
- upgrades are all handled by the provider
- the software is always available, no matter what computer you are using - as long as it is online
- reduction in software licence costs
There are also some criticisms or risks of SaaS:
- What happens to your data, processes and software if the supplier folds?
- Free software advocates criticise SaaS because it prevents users from improving their software
