In computing terms, local often refers to the machine you have physical access to - so, the one on your desktop or your laptop. This is opposed to a server which you might not have physical access to, but which you can connect to over the internet.

Local is also an important term for many online innovation projects, which have a geographical focus. See hyperlocal for more on this.
