A blog is best described as a regularly updated website, where the entries are presented in reverse chronological order - that is, with the most recent first.

A lot of people think a blog is a personal online diary, which isn't strictly true. Blogs can be like diaries, but they can be used to publish any kind of content.

The word blog describes the whole site. The individual articles tend to be referred to as posts.

Blogs often feature:

  • Permalinks - each article or post on the blog has its own unique link, or URL which can be linked to from other blogs, websites or social networks
  • Comments - readers can post their own responses to a post using a simple web form. Comments can sometimes be moderated by the author to prevent unpleasant stuff being published
  • When people link to blog posts, the author is alerted to the link by a trackback
  • Decent blogs allow you to subscribe to them via email or RSS
